Blue Topaz - The Perfect Gemstone for Any Season

When you think of topaz, what comes to mind? A yellow or gold stone, a pale brown gem? If that's what you're thinking, you're probably in the majority. But there's more to topaz than that.

These "common" forms of topaz - known most commonly as being November's birthstone, are plentiful. A bit more rare: blue topaz, which is found quite infrequently in nature. However, pure topaz (often clear or grey) can be treated with irradiation and heat, resulting is an array of blues that go across the spectrum. Gamma radiation is the most commonly utilized form, although beta radiation and neutron radiation are used occasionally to create the desired shade of blue. And, it is this blue topaz that can be either a beautiful solitaire ring, gorgeous earrings, or can pair with other semi-precious gems to make a unique piece that can be "dressed up" or "dressed down".

The treatment means that blue topaz can have varied hues (the treatment, by the way, does not damage the stone; topaz is one of the most resilient gems found in nature). But by and large, blue topaz can be grouped into one of three shades: "Sky", "Swiss", and "London Blue". Think of them along a spectrum of light to dark, with Sky being a pretty, light color and London Blue comparable to a sapphire.

What makes blue topaz unique unlike gemstones that have a uniform color, is that the three shades can shift in color depending on how they are set, in silver, platinum, or gold. In silver or platinum, the beautiful shades of blue provide a sense of serenity and "coolness", pretty against a summer tan, or offset against spring pastels. Set in gold the stones warm up and can be worn year-round. And again, the general "toughness" of the stone makes it appropriate for everyday wear.

You'll find the three shades of blue topaz represented in earrings, pendants, and rings. A couple of ideas: A necklace of intermixed stones, such as amethyst, blue topaz, and citrine, can be beautiful and one of the big "jewelry trends", of late, is setting these stones in yellow gold, to dress up a suit or business ensemble. A notable figure following this trend? Hillary Clinton, who sported a gorgeous necklace of mixed gems during her Presidential run. A deep, vibrantly colored "London Blue" blue topaz, with an emerald (square) cut set in sterling silver as a ring, can be an amazing cocktail piece that will draw the eye (and garner compliments), for a fraction of what a similar piece of sapphires and platinum might cost. Pale blue topaz stones, set with pearls, can be drop earrings that are perfect for a bride, something new, something blue, and will photograph beautifully!

Blue topaz is a gem that should not be overlooked, and in gold or silver, earrings or rings, it will be a part of pieces that will always merit a second look.
