Blue Topaz Care

Blue Topaz (and topaz in general) has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness and is considered as a tough and durable gemstone. However, there are a few things you should be aware of to take good care of your blue topaz.

Don't Drop!

Topaz is a very hard gemstone, but it can be split with a single blow! Like diamonds, topaz have perfect cleavage - which means that a sharp blow from the right direction will cause the stone to split perfectly along the cleavage line. For this reason, it's important to protect blue topaz from situations where it may receive a sharp blow.

Everyday Cautions

Don't expose you blue topas to acids and rapid temperature changes, strong heat may alter or destroy the color. You should also remove your blue topaz jewelry when doing house or yard work, and before applying makeup and hair spray.

Cleaning Blue Topaz

The best way to care for topaz is to clean it with warm (lukewarm), mild soapy water. Use a soft cloth or brush to scrub carefully if necessary. Never use ultrasonic or mechanical cleaners and avoid harsh chemical cleaning solutions.
